Eating Healthy while Dining Out

Eating Healthy while Dining Out

Dining out doesn’t have to be the demise of your healthy eating habits.  If you’re the type of person who follows a low-fat eating plan, do not let pushy waiters or restaurant menus intimidate you into eating unhealthy.  Remember, the customer is always right.  The same rules apply in restaurants as they do at home.  Order food the way you want it prepared, even if it means sending it back once or twice until they get it right.

Here are some simple guidelines to follow:

THINGS TO AVOID

  • Creamy sauces
  • Salad dressing, unless its fat-free. Low fat dressing still has too much fat
  • Fried foods
  • Empty calorie desserts
  • Processed meats
  • Cole slaw, potato and macaroni salad
  • Mayo
  • Nacho chips
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Nuts and peanuts
  • Sour cream

THINGS TO ORDER

  • red or plain tomato sauce
  • salad dressing on the side if fat free is not an option. Stick the tongs of your fork into the dressing first, then into your salad
  • order all foods baked or grilled
  • fresh fruit and veggies
  • bread without butter
  • white meat chicken, turkey or fish
  • lean cuts of red meat
  • low or nonfat yogurt
  • plain baked potato
  • egg whites or egg beaters
  • pasta plain or in red sauce
  • non creamy soups

Remember, you’re the boss.  Don’t be afraid to ask how your food is prepared.  Worse comes to worse, just tell the server that you suffer from a severe allergic reaction to butter and oil and if you eat it, you’ll get violently ill.  Happy Eating!
